How To
Get Involved
An effort like this can only succeed with the active participation of a wide
variety of people. Most of the work happens at the committee and subcommittee
levels, which are where people with time, energy, and interest are needed.
The MDCA is already doing great things in
Montpelier but there is much more to be done. You can help! Consider becoming a
contributing member. If you have time to volunteer on one of our committees,
you’ll find it very rewarding. With your help, we can continue to make a
difference in Montpelier!
Join the MDCA!
Providing flowers for downtown planters…purchasing attractive trash receptacles
for our streets…securing grants to fund sprinkler systems…obtaining tax credits
for building improvements…bringing people together for community
discussions…being a voice for downtown businesses or residents. MDCA members
make all this possible with their support. In return, members receive
invitations to community forums and special downtown events. Business members
also receive discounts on cooperative advertising campaigns, access to tax
credits, technical assistance and invitations for networking opportunities and
business seminars. However, the most important benefit of membership is the
knowledge that your support helps make Montpelier a great place to live, work
and play!
Volunteer!
Much of the MDCA’s efforts involve creating and enhancing projects that improve
downtown Montpelier’s economic, social and physical appearance. This work is
accomplished through the MDCA’s five sub-committees. To learn more about these
committees or other volunteer opportunities, contact Heather Shouldice,
Executive Director at 223-9604 or at heather@mdca.org. (Note that Committee
meeting locations are subject to change)
Design Committee: works to improve the physical aspects of
Montpelier’s downtown (streetscape, lighting, facades, circulation etc.) and
develop strategies to ensure an attractive appearance highlighting the city’s
unique assets and heritage. The committee meets on the third Thursday of each
month at 8 AM at Montpelier City Hall.
Economic Restructuring Committee: focuses on developing an optimum
mix of businesses, retail, service, lodging, residences and cultural activities
to ensure economic vitality in downtown Montpelier. The committee meets on the
last Tuesday of each month at 5:30 PM at City Hall.

communication, promotion and marketing in the downtown’s retail sector by
providing business planning and marketing assistance, seasonal retail promotions
and by addressing concerns and issues that may affect the business climate. The

Organization Committee: works to create an appropriate
organizational structure that will be the basis for a long-term,
self-sustaining, and stable Downtown program. The committee meets on the first

Promotions Committee: develops strategies for promoting and
marketing a unified, high-quality image for the Downtown as well as supporting
