| Montpelier SculptCycle 2008 will be displaying 20 SculptCycles (sculptures made with recycled bicycle parts) throughout downtown Montpelier between June and October 2008. In September and October, the SculptCycles will then be auctioned off and the proceeds will be used to support the artists and further promote Montpelier’s economic development by branding it as a vibrant and creative destination.

John Brickels: John Brickels is a clay sculptor making his home in Essex Junction, VT. John's work has garnered significant recognition and received numerous rewards. His sculptures are inspired by the engaging architecture he grew up around in Akron, Ohio: old Victorian houses with endless porches, shadowy attics and meandering stairways, and tire factories that loomed down the block belching steam and rubber aroma. Lochlin Smith & Ward Joyce: Lochlin Smith is an accomplished Vermont artist who has been designing distictive and timeless bronze and silver jewelry for over thirty years. His large metal sculpture are equally inspired, playing with balance, movement, mass, and gravity. Ward Joyce is an artist and architect living in Montpelier, VT. He has a Master of Architecture from the University of Minnesota and a Studio Arts degree from Middlebury College. Along with Lochlin, Ward is a recipient of Montpelier Public Arts Fund/National Endowment for the Arts public sculpture grant, 2000. While in Montpelier you can see their collaborative sculpture, entitled "Riverpiece”, over-hanging the river on Langdon Street next to The Shoe Horn. Patrick Purcell, Allison Purcell, & Lawrence Cassidy: Patrick Purcell is a sculptor and jeweler from New Milford, CT, with over 40 years experience. Early works include, "curled-up" concrete representations of man's best friend, large freestanding amartures of found objects, delicately balanced geometric steel constructs, and organic, earthly bronzes. His award winning work is collected throughout the United States and internationally. You can see his work at several Connecticut galleries, including the Gregory James Gallery. Patrick's daughter, Allison, created the weathervane painting and titanium birds while Lawrence painted the bikes. |

SulptCycle Artists receive a $500 stipend; 20% of the final auction price; and a chance to receive awards. On June 7, artist, curator, and Vermont Supreme Court Justice, Marilyn Skoglund annouced her selections for the monetary awards as well as her own non-monetary selections. These included:
On October 4, during the Live Auction and Gala, the People's Choice Award, with a monetary prize of $500, will be annouced. Visitors to Montpelier can pick up ballots, which contains a map of SculptCycle locations, throughout the downtown including, The Drawing Board, City Hall, Artisans Hand Craft Gallery, The Lazy Pear Gallery, Capitol Grounds, Rhapsody, and the Montpelier Visitor's Center. In addition, one SculptCycle will be purchased by MDCA for permanent display in downtown Montpelier. |
